Aug. 5, 2019

John Krinjak from ABC6 News, Providence, RI, interviewed Jayanti Owens about her findings on racial disparities in school discipline. Looking at approximately 5,000 elementary students across the country, Owens and FFCWS Co-PI Sara McLanahan concluded African-American students are four times more likely to be suspended or expelled than their white counterparts.

Owens discussed her reaction to these findings and suggestions for both policy and parents. To watch the interview, see the full article on the ABC6 site.

This interview is based on a recent paper using FFCWS data which was published in Social Forces, "Unpacking the Drivers of Racial Disparities in School Suspension and Expulsion".
